Detectable Plastic Polymer Compounds For Food Production Applications

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

TBA Electro Conductive Products (ECP) has announced the availability of a wide range of magnetically detectable polymers for use in food manufacturing and similar applications where there is a requirement to detect plastic parts in production lines.

The new range includes eight compounds that are suitable for a variety of processes including injection moulding, extrusion and film.

ECP 210 is a magnetic compound based on special blends of magnetic additive compounded into polypropylene (PP) in such a way as to optimise the physical and magnetic properties during processing. It is suitable for packaging, liquid containers and thin wall extrusions such as corrugated sheet.

Normally supplied in a light blue colour, ECP 225 is a colourable magnetically detectable polyethylene (PE) for film blowing and extrusion and is ideal for creating bags, bin liners, covers and layflat tubing.

ECP 226 is a black coloured magnetic linear low density PE compound based on special blends of iron oxide compounded into modified linear low density PE to optimise physical and magnetic properties during film blowing.

For large containers and bins, ECP 228 is a magnetically detectable rotational moulding powder based on special blends of magnetic additive compounded into a specially developed easy flow linear PE formulation. The compound is designed to produce mouldings of good rigidity combined with excellent impact resistance.

ECP 245 is a magnetically detectable Nylon 6 that is recommended for use in applications such as machine parts where frictional characteristics predominate, e.g. gears, slides, cams and bearings. It is also ideal for use where parts with good physical properties are required such as cable ties and brush bristles, and for components that need to exhibit good chemical resistance.

For sheet extrusion applications and moulded enclosures, ECP 270 is a magnetic compound based on special blends of magnetic additive compounded into ABS.

ECP 280 is a colourable magnetically detectable thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) suitable for injection moulding and extrusion. Normally supplied in blue, ECP 280 is ideal for producing grip handles, hoses and tubing, gaskets and conveyor rollers.

Completing TBA ECP’s new family of magnetically detectable compounds is ECP 290, an injection moulding/extrusion grade detectable thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) that is ideal for hoses, tool grips and sheet applications.

Besides the new family of magnetically detectable polymer compounds, TBA ECP is also introducing a range of finished products manufactured from the detectable compounds that are ideal for use in food processing environments.

Innovative Conductive Plastic Compounds In Polycond Project

Monday, June 1st, 2009

TBA Electro Conductive Products (ECP) is developing innovative conductive plastic compounds within the Pan-European PolyCond project that is aimed at creating eco-friendly, cost-effective and high added value conductive plastic composites.

PolyCond is a transnational project, being part financed by the European Commission (EC) under the sixth framework programme as an Integrated Project (IPSME scheme – project number IP 515835-2). The project is designed to address the needs of European plastics converters, a traditionally less research-intensive industry mainly composed of small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs)

Commenting on the project, David Hurst, TBA ECP’s general manager said, “We are very pleased to be a part of PolyCond, a project that complements the aims of TBA ECP and will enable us to contribute our many years of experience in producing conductive plastics for EMI/RFI shielding and static control. We will also benefit from access to the results of PolyCond’s research output.”

PolyCond’s approach aims to deliver plastic components with embedded EMI shielding functionality, weight reduction of at least 60%, total cost reduction of shielding components approaching 90% and reduction of production time by 80%, thus improving productivity.

The main challenges for the project are to enhance the conductivity and extend the processing window of existing melt processable ICPs (Inherently Conductive Polymers) and to improve the compatibility and dispersion of conductive nanofillers in complex matrices.

PolyCond will benefit plastics processors in the EU by developing new technologies and providing solutions to key long-term problems. The multidisciplinary and integrated approach includes technology transfer with training activities, thereby mobilising EU and regional funding.
