TBA Electro Conductive Products (ECP) now offers one of the UK’s most comprehensive ranges of Beryllium Copper EMI/RFI shielding strips available from a single source. The company’s portfolio of BeCu EMI/RFI shielding products is one of the largest standard ranges of fingerstock profiles available in the UK and, in many instances, the company can despatch from stock.

In the unlikely event of a profile being out of stock, most profiles can be despatched within two weeks. Profiles are available in full lengths (usually 406mm) or can be supplied cut down to customer requirements.

Fingerstock BeCu shielding strips are available in an extensive range of mounting styles including clip-on, stick-on, snap-on, special mounting products, low profile and hook-on gaskets and connector gaskets. A wide range of plating options is available including clean and bright, gold, silver, bright tin, bright nickel, zinc/clear chromate and electroless nickel among others. These plating options ensure compatibility with most metals, avoiding any potential problems of galvanic corrosion.

Beryllium copper shielding strips offer excellent spring qualities and long life. Other important characteristics include low closing forces and high attenuation exceeding 100dB for many styles. The pure metal BeCu shielding strips deliver superior attenuation compared to fabric gaskets. Metal gaskets also offer greater longevity as they are harder wearing than fabric types. When used in sliding applications, BeCu gaskets are self-cleaning.

Engineers’ Design Packs, featuring small samples of BeCu gaskets presented in an A4 folder, are available to help designers choose the correct profile for the job. The company can also cross refer competitor part numbers so if a customer has been let down by a supplier or their original supplier stops providing the part, TBA ECP is usually able to offer a direct or very near equivalent replacement.

Complementing its range of beryllium copper shielding strips, TBA ECP also supplies stainless steel versions of its low-profile and pressure sensitive mounting gaskets. These extend the choice of materials available to design engineers and provide hard-wearing and long-lasting EMI/RFI shielding in a wide range of applications.

range of soft foam gaskets for EMI shielding meets the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive 2002/95/EC (RoHS Directive).

The directive bans the use of certain substances in new products from July 2006, specifically Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, Hexavalent Chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE).

TBA ECP’s extensive range of fabric over foam gaskets contain none of the banned substances and fully meet RoHS directive requirements.

Comprising a polyurethane foam core with highly conductive fabric coatings, the gaskets are available in a wide variety of shapes and thicknesses from commonly used rectangular and D-shape to specialist shapes such as folding leaf (FL) and double-D shape. TBA ECP can also provide gaskets in custom shapes and sizes to meet customers’ specific requirements.

TBA ECP also offers a range of conductive EMI shielding LCD cushions and a range of gold plated gaskets that provide superior shielding characteristics and offer excellent abrasion resistance and anti-oxidisation.

TBA Electro Conductive Products (ECP) is developing innovative conductive plastic compounds within the Pan-European PolyCond project that is aimed at creating eco-friendly, cost-effective and high added value conductive plastic composites.

PolyCond is a transnational project, being part financed by the European Commission (EC) under the sixth framework programme as an Integrated Project (IPSME scheme – project number IP 515835-2). The project is designed to address the needs of European plastics converters, a traditionally less research-intensive industry mainly composed of small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs)

Commenting on the project, David Hurst, TBA ECP’s general manager said, “We are very pleased to be a part of PolyCond, a project that complements the aims of TBA ECP and will enable us to contribute our many years of experience in producing conductive plastics for EMI/RFI shielding and static control. We will also benefit from access to the results of PolyCond’s research output.”

PolyCond’s approach aims to deliver plastic components with embedded EMI shielding functionality, weight reduction of at least 60%, total cost reduction of shielding components approaching 90% and reduction of production time by 80%, thus improving productivity.

The main challenges for the project are to enhance the conductivity and extend the processing window of existing melt processable ICPs (Inherently Conductive Polymers) and to improve the compatibility and dispersion of conductive nanofillers in complex matrices.

PolyCond will benefit plastics processors in the EU by developing new technologies and providing solutions to key long-term problems. The multidisciplinary and integrated approach includes technology transfer with training activities, thereby mobilising EU and regional funding.

EMI shielding specialist, TBA Electro Conductive Products (ECP) has introduced three new beryllium copper EMI/RFI shielding strips offering enhanced strength with improved flexibility.

The new Alternate Slot Gaskets are ideal for bidirectional applications including sub-rack assemblies, plug-in units, front panels, backplanes and other shielding and grounding enclosure applications.

Extending across the contact radius of these new symmetrical profile gaskets are slots alternating from one side to the other. This provides increased strength while maintaining the gasket’s flexibility. The gaskets require only a low closing force while snap-mounting on a track or direct to metalwork provides a secure mechanical assembly.

The new Alternate Slot Gaskets also meet the requirements of the RoHS and WEEE directives.

Like all TBA ECP’s beryllium copper gaskets, the new alternate slot designs are available in a wide range of plating options including clean and bright (unsolderable) as standard, solderable unplated, gold, silver, tin lead, bright tin, bright nickel, zinc/clear chromate and electroless nickel among others.
